Meet Bryon Spicer | Owner and President

A Retirement Coach Specializing in Retirement Planning including Distribution, Taxes and Preservation

Bryon K. Spicer has dedicated more than three decades of his life to informing and assisting retirees and pre-retirees on how to plan for and protect “Financial Strategies for their Golden Years.”

“I started my career back in 1976 when I was in college and was working for an insurance agency. As a result of that, I went full-time and ended up owning and operating both small and large insurance agencies,” he said. “We did the auto, the home, life, health – you name it.”

His transition to starting his own investment firm came organically when clients would say to him, “Well, Bryon you are doing everything else for us, why don’t you do our investing too?”

Thus, the process began and Bryon transitioned to the investing side of the house in 1996. Then a personal experience sharpened his focus further to senior investing.

Read more below:

“My mom was very, very ill with a heart condition, where we brought her back to life six to eight times in a course of 90 days,” he said. “Just being exposed to all the things seniors have to deal with from a financial standpoint – from what medical coverage applies, what doesn’t apply, what benefits are available and that kind of stuff – really got me focused on learning how the senior market is not served properly.”

With wrong information and misconceptions floating around, Spicer is adamant on working with only value-adding services in a retiree’s portfolio. He is not interested in risking money that someone has worked his or her whole life to accumulate.

Seniors Financial Services and Spicer Wealth Management in Beavercreek, OH is a full-service financial firm helping the very same seniors Bryon cares about so that they can enjoy their golden years and have a stream of income they can rely on for their lifetime.

Spicer calls his firm a wealth advisor that is almost along the same lines as a “retirement coach.”

“We focus on preserving your money, making sure that even in retirement, you have this income stream to maintain the lifestyle you’ve grown accustomed to,” he added. “We want to make sure that the assets you have are protected from some unseen event and make sure you are not paying more in taxes than you need to be, so we do a lot of planning that includes tax considerations so people are not subject to unnecessary taxes. Then you see where the investment piece comes into play here.” Planning can include taxes such as income, estate, capital gains, gift and generation skipping.

“When that client comes into the other firms, they have to sell something of whatever they have, so it’s like going to the Chevy dealer,” he joked. “He is going to put him arm around you, ask you a few questions and walk you over to the Chevy Impala because that’s what he sells.”

With access to all the market, Spicer focuses only on the goals of the client, not himself or his firm, and then identifies the tool that will work best for the client. “We find the product that meets the client’s retirement needs and goals. Like in that car example, we will look at multiple car manufacturers and find a car best suited for that client.”

Distribution planning is another core focus for Spicer, making sure that what is left over officially goes to the people they love and care for, and not paid in unnecessary taxes or fees.

Each client is guided through a planning process where all the areas, including distribution, wealth preservation and taxes are discussed, and a priority is established. “We want to focus on the goals they want to accomplish because when they were working, they were building up assets up so that when they retire, they can now live their dreams. They can travel and spend time with their grandkids … we want them to focus on those things, not if they have enough money to pay their bills.

The goal is to get retirees to avoid the concerns about running out of money or getting sick and needing long-term care. Spicer is focused to shelter assets from the market in case of a downturn like in 2008, and to create that lasting legacy for future generations

How does one firm specialize in all these vast areas? The associates at Spicer Wealth have aligned themselves with experts in each of numerous areas to consult with and utilize their knowledge necessary to hit on all these aspects for seniors. “We utilize the experts and share it with our clientele.

“You can’t talk about investing without talking about how it will affect their tax return now and in the future, and how it will affect their distribution now and in the future,” he said. “If you are only giving advice on buying say a mutual fund, that’s great, but what is the tax ramifications on that?”

Spicer is all about hard work to get clients where they need to be. “I worked my way through college – I had five jobs. I worked my way up with one job as a janitor cleaning for the insurance agent to being an insurance agent to being an owner of a firm.” Other wealth advisors may not relate to how hard a retiree has worked to get to this point of their life like Bryon.

Working on preserving this hard-earned nest egg, Spicer is all about being a specialist in the field, lending his expertise to the segment of the population ready to hang up their working boots and focus on what’s really important to them in this phase of their life. “In the medical community, you have family doctors and you have neurosurgeons. Most financial advisors are family doctors, they know a little bit about a lot of things. Then you have the neurosurgeons and the more I was in this field, the more I wanted to specialize.”

This specialization does not come easy. His associates spend hundreds of hours a year continuing to train and educate themselves in order to maintain their expertise. The firm researches not only what investment products are available and coming out everyday, but also the ramifications of tax laws that Congress is constantly changing.

With all the hard work, all the knowledge, the specialization and success comes praise from the media and the investment community. Spicer’s firm has been recognized two years in a row by Cincinnati Magazine as one of the top wealth advisors in the area. In addition, Ohio State University respected Spicer so much that the prestigious establishment of higher learning brought him in as a guest lecturer to infuse future financial minds with relevant information.

“That was fun! When you are called into mold the minds of students in the academia world and you are telling them how the real world works on a guest lecture basis, that is obviously a real honor,” he said.

Recently, Spicer shot a 30-minute TV shoot with Patti Gribow that focused on his book, “Don’t Get Sacked in Retirement,” which is what Bryon calls a financial quarterback’s playbook for winning the game that is life after work ends. This book will talk about routine mistakes people make in handling their finances and other issues that every senior should be aware of if they want to breathe easier during this stage of the game.

Different chapters of the book include “Driving for the Goal Line: Retirement Dreams and Pitfalls,” “Learning the Playbook: Why You need a Retirement Strategy,” “How to Score Six for the Big Win: Income You Can Count On,” and “How to Score Three and Save on Taxes.”

“We used the football theme because it mirrors what we do – we are the quarterback for the client,” he said of the book. “We anticipate what plays we need to use and when we need to use them. Like a quarterback, we work with other professionals to make sure they do their part in the offense.”

Katherine Shaw | Marketing Coordinator

Kathy Shaw has traveled several paths before filling the position of Marketing Coordinator at Seniors Financial Services. Kathy worked in the dental field for 13 years where she learned the skill of making people feel relaxed and comfortable in very stressful situations. At the end of the 13 years she embarked on a different path, attending floral design school and purchasing a flower shop in Springfield, Ohio.

Kathy owned Fogarty Florist for 15 years where her staff grew from 3 to 10 employees, and the flower shop became one of the largest floral shops in Springfield. During these 15 years, she was very active with FTD and sat on their regional board of directors whose purpose was to market the FTD name and logo, show the benefit of group purchases and try to unify the local florists within the Miami Valley.

After selling the flower shop, Kathy applied for the Marketing Coordinator position with Seniors Financial Services. She has served our clients here for almost a decade. Kathy’s role includes organizing the workshops and social events throughout the year as well as acting as our client liason.
